 Summary

A resting electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart.

The test uses adhesive electrodes placed on various parts of the body to record the rhythm of beats over a 10 second period.

How to prepare

  • Eat and drink as normal before the test.

  • Avoid using any lotions on your chest – these interfere with the adhesive electrodes.

  • Bring a complete list of your medications to your appointment as ECG patterns can be affected by various medications.

  • Wear a two-piece outfit as you’ll be asked to undress to the waist.

  • Women will be able to leave their bra on and wear a gown.

What to expect

  • We will connect ten sticky electrodes to various parts of your body. These sites will be cleansed first with alcohol wipes.

  • Some men require a small amount of shaving to ensure good electrical contact between the electrode and skin.

  • The electrodes are connected to leads to provide signals for the ECG to record.

  • You’ll lie back while the recording is completed.

Timing

The ECG test usually takes 20 minutes.
