Summary
A resting electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart.
The test uses adhesive electrodes placed on various parts of the body to record the rhythm of beats over a 10 second period.
How to prepare
Eat and drink as normal before the test.
Avoid using any lotions on your chest – these interfere with the adhesive electrodes.
Bring a complete list of your medications to your appointment as ECG patterns can be affected by various medications.
Wear a two-piece outfit as you’ll be asked to undress to the waist.
Women will be able to leave their bra on and wear a gown.
What to expect
We will connect ten sticky electrodes to various parts of your body. These sites will be cleansed first with alcohol wipes.
Some men require a small amount of shaving to ensure good electrical contact between the electrode and skin.
The electrodes are connected to leads to provide signals for the ECG to record.
You’ll lie back while the recording is completed.
Timing
The ECG test usually takes 20 minutes.
